Construction Drawing Types Explained

Understanding the organization of construction documents by discipline and sheet type

Sheet Numbering System

Construction drawings follow a standard organization using the NCS (National CAD Standard) or similar systems. Each sheet is numbered with a prefix letter indicating the discipline, followed by a number indicating the sheet type and sequence. For a deeper look at how sheets are organized, see our standard sheet organization guide.

Example: A-201
  • A = Architectural discipline
  • 2 = Sheet type (2 = Elevations)
  • 01 = Sequence number (first sheet of type)

Tips for Navigating Drawings

  • Start with the index — G-002 lists all sheets and helps you find what you need
  • Read general notes first — X-001 sheets contain critical project-wide information, including construction abbreviations
  • Follow reference marks — Details and sections are cross-referenced; trace them. Learn more about architectural plan symbols to understand reference marks
  • Check multiple disciplines — Floor plans from A, M, E, P should all coordinate
  • Use the legend — Symbol meanings vary; always check the project legend. Each discipline has its own symbols, such as electrical plan symbols
