Structural Plan Symbols

Common symbols used in structural engineering drawings. These symbols represent connections, framing systems, and slab conditions. Note that each structural engineering office may use their own variations—always check the project symbol legend.

Moment Connection

Moment Connection

Represents a rigid connection between structural members that can transfer both forces and moments

Cantilevered Moment Connection

Cantilevered Moment Connection

Indicates a moment connection with cantilevered configuration extending beyond support

Braced Frame

Braced Frame

Shows diagonal bracing within a structural frame system for lateral stability

Steel Column Encased in Concrete

Steel Column Encased in Concrete

Identifies structural steel columns surrounded by concrete for fire protection or composite action

Slab Opening

Slab Opening

Designates openings or penetrations through floor or roof slabs for stairs, elevators, or MEP

Stepped or Depressed Slab

Stepped or Depressed Slab

Shows elevation changes or depressions in slab surfaces for drainage or level transitions

Span Direction

Span Direction

Indicates the direction structural members span across supports, typically for deck or slab framing

Important Note

Structural plan symbols can vary significantly between engineering firms and projects. The symbols shown here represent common conventions, but you should always refer to the specific project's symbol legend sheet for accurate interpretation. When in doubt, consult with the structural engineer of record.
